Police in Busia have intercepted and seized a large consignment of illicit ethanol valued at over Sh 22 million during a multi-agency operation along the Amase–Amongura Road.
The operation, conducted by a multi-agency security team acting on intelligence, targeted a suspicious trailer believed to be transporting illegal goods through the region.
According to the National Police Service, officers stopped the vehicle and carried out a detailed search, confirming it was carrying ethanol without valid documentation.
“The operation involved the pursuit of a suspicious trailer believed to be ferrying illicit goods. Upon interception, officers confirmed it was transporting ethanol without proper documentation,” the police said.

Authorities recovered 76 plastic containers, each holding 250 litres, bringing the total seized volume to approximately 18,500 litres of ethanol.
“During inspection, we recovered 76 containers of ethanol, amounting to approximately 18,500 litres with an estimated street value of Sh 22.2 million,” the statement added.
Three suspects were arrested during the operation and are currently in custody awaiting arraignment in court. The trailer was escorted to Adungosi Police Station, where it remains secured as investigations continue.
Police praised the operation as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle illicit trade networks and protect public safety.
“We remain committed to disrupting illegal activities, protecting legitimate trade, and safeguarding the public from harmful substances,” the service stated.
The seizure comes amid heightened enforcement efforts targeting smuggling and illegal alcohol distribution along key border routes.
