The National Police Service (NPS) has reported a breakthrough in its ongoing peaceful disarmament campaign in Turkana County after a resident voluntarily surrendered an illegal firearm to security authorities.
In a statement, the NPS said the surrender was achieved through sustained intelligence-led operations, community engagement, and public sensitisation efforts being conducted jointly with other security agencies across the county.
According to the police, an AK-47 rifle was handed over by a resident of Lokwamosing Village in Lochakula Location, Turkana East Sub-County.
The Service described the move as a positive sign of growing trust and cooperation between local communities and security agencies in the region.
“This demonstrates growing cooperation between local communities and security agencies,” the National Police Service said.
Police officials attributed the development to ongoing awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging residents to voluntarily surrender illegally held firearms in order to enhance security and promote lasting peace.
The NPS thanked members of the public for their continued support and urged residents to remain vigilant by sharing information that could help security officers recover more illicit weapons.
“The Service appreciates the continued cooperation and support from members of the public and urges them to maintain this collaboration by providing information that will assist in the recovery of additional illegal firearms,” the statement added.
The police service reiterated its commitment to expanding public education campaigns on the dangers of illegal firearms and the benefits of voluntary disarmament.
“The National Police Service remains committed to intensifying public sensitisation and awareness campaigns on the importance of voluntarily surrendering illicit weapons—a critical step towards creating a secure environment, protecting lives and property, and supporting sustainable peace and development in the county,” NPS stated.
Authorities believe that reducing the number of illegal firearms in circulation will play a key role in curbing insecurity, livestock theft, and inter-community conflicts that have historically affected parts of Turkana and neighbouring regions.
The disarmament exercise continues across the county as security agencies seek to strengthen peace and stability through cooperation with local communities.
