President William Ruto has presided over the passing-out parade of more than 5,000 Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruits at the Defence Forces Recruit Training School (DFRTS) in Kamagut, Uasin Gishu County.
The ceremony marks the completion of an intensive foundational military training programme for the recruits, who are now set to begin the next phase of their careers in the Kenya Defence Forces.
The event brings together recruits drawn from different parts of the country and highlights the completion of one of the most demanding stages in the journey to becoming members of Kenya’s military.
The Defence Forces Recruit Training School has traditionally served as a key institution for preparing newly enlisted personnel for military service.
According to the Ministry of Defence, recruits undergo foundational training covering areas such as discipline, physical conditioning, field craft, leadership development and core soldiering skills.
The latest cohort follows the nationwide KDF recruitment exercise conducted in 2025. The recruitment process covered General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen and Tradeswomen, among other categories, with successful candidates undergoing verification, medical screening and documentation before commencing training.
The Ministry of Defence previously said recruits joining the Defence Forces Recruit Training School would undergo six months of foundational military training before proceeding to specialised training in their respective services, units and formations.
A major milestone for the recruits
For the more than 5,000 recruits passing out in Kamagut, the ceremony represents the culmination of months of demanding preparation and the beginning of their formal careers in the military.
During the initial stages of training, recruits are introduced to the discipline and routines required in military service.
The Ministry of Defence has described the programme as involving different stages designed to transform recruits into disciplined and capable members of the Defence Forces.
When Cohort 01/25 reported to DFRTS in November 2025, officials said the recruits came from all 47 counties and included both General Duty recruits and Tradesmen and Tradeswomen.
The recruits were also reminded that joining the KDF comes with significant responsibility, requiring discipline, commitment and dedication to national service.
KDF recruitment attracts thousands of Kenyans
KDF recruitment remains highly competitive, with thousands of young Kenyans seeking opportunities to join the military during nationwide recruitment exercises.
In October 2025, the KDF announced the conclusion of its nationwide recruitment exercise for General Duty Recruits.
The Ministry of Defence said the exercise had been conducted across the country and emphasised the importance of transparency and equal opportunity in the selection process.
The military has also repeatedly warned members of the public against recruitment fraud and emphasised that official KDF recruitment is free.
Its 2025 recruitment advertisement cautioned applicants against bribery and other forms of malpractice.
The passing-out parade in Kamagut therefore serves not only as a graduation ceremony but also as a significant public display of the country’s investment in military personnel and national service.
President Ruto’s presence at the event underscores the importance attached to the induction of new personnel into the Kenya Defence Forces as they prepare to undertake their duties in service of the country.
The newly graduated recruits will now proceed to their respective assignments and specialised training pathways, marking the transition from basic military training to the next chapter of their careers in the KDF.
