Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has intensified efforts to popularise his newly registered political outfit, the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), as he eyes a stronger national presence ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
The NEDP was officially registered on December 9, 2025, as a platform aimed at promoting economic transformation, development and improved livelihoods for Kenyans.
Since its registration by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), the party has been chaired by Dr. John Nyamu.
Speaking on the party’s vision, Sonko said the NEDP is open to all Kenyans regardless of age or political background, calling for unity in driving change across the country.

“We welcome everyone from Gen Z to elders, from all political backgrounds, anyone who believes in changing our country. Let us join hands and work together,” said Sonko.
The party allows eligible Kenyans to become official members through several channels in line with the Constitution of Kenya and the Political Parties Act.
To qualify for membership, applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid national ID or passport, and must not be active members of another registered political party.
Members are also required to commit to the party’s constitution, values and code of conduct, and support its agenda on economic empowerment, transparency and good governance.
Membership registration is primarily coordinated through the ORPP. Kenyans can join the NEDP via the *509# USSD system by submitting their personal details, selecting the party, and confirming their membership once approved. The process does not attract a registration fee, apart from minimal airtime costs.
Prospective members can also register online through the official NEDP website by filling out and submitting a digital membership form.
Physical registration is available at the party’s headquarters at Ramco Court Block in Nairobi, county offices, and during official party mobilisation events. Membership cards may be issued during in-person registration drives.

The party has also outlined clear exit procedures for members wishing to resign before joining another political party, either through the ORPP USSD system or by submitting a formal written request to NEDP offices.
Registered members in good standing will be eligible to contest elective positions under the NEDP ticket, subject to the party’s constitution, nomination rules, the Political Parties Act and IEBC regulations.
Aspirants must meet all legal requirements, including voter registration, integrity standards and exclusive party membership at the time of nomination.
Notably, the party has not yet set nomination fees, citing its recent registration barely two months ago.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the NEDP leadership says it is focused on grassroots mobilisation and building a broad-based movement anchored on economic development and inclusive governance.
