Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Mwea East have arraigned a suspect accused of defrauding members of the public of Sh3 million through a fake recruitment scheme into the National Police Service (NPS).
The case was reported at Wang’uru Police Station by three complainants who alleged that the suspect, Mercy Prudence Mbaika Mutie, falsely claimed she could facilitate their employment into the police service.
“Relying on her claims, the victims handed over substantial sums of money in the belief that they would secure positions in the National Police Service,” detectives said.
Police further stated that after receiving the money, the suspect allegedly went into hiding and cut off communication with the victims, prompting them to report the matter after attempts to recover their funds failed.
Following investigations, DCI officers traced and arrested the suspect before presenting her in court.
She was arraigned at the Wang’uru Law Courts, where she faces charges of conspiracy to defraud contrary to Section 317 of the Penal Code and three counts of obtaining money by false pretences contrary to Section 313 of the Penal Code.
The court released her on a cash bail of Sh500,000 with a surety of a similar amount.
The DCI has since warned the public against falling victim to fraudsters purporting to influence recruitment into government institutions.
“Members of the public are advised that recruitment into the National Police Service is transparent, merit-based and strictly free of charge,” the agency said.
