Police have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of involvement in the killing of a United States national during a robbery in Garissa County in May.
The suspect, identified as Muhiyadin Abdi Sheikh, was arrested in the Kabete area of Nairobi following an intelligence-led operation by DCI Garissa detectives who had been pursuing him for several days.
Police said the suspect had gone into hiding after the incident and was traced to his hideout in Kabete.
The case dates back to May 28, 2026, when Osman Aways, a US national, was allegedly attacked by assailants who robbed him of his phone and cash in Bulla Mzuri, Garissa.
According to police, Aways was stabbed in the left leg during the robbery and later died while undergoing treatment at Antalya Hospital in Garissa.
An investigation was launched following the incident, but the main suspect reportedly remained at large.
Detectives eventually tracked him to Nairobi, where he was arrested and taken into custody at Kasarani Police Station.
His brother was alerted to the incident by a well-wisher who had obtained his number from the victim. He rushed to the scene, where he found his brother in pain, and immediately took him to Antalya Hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body was subsequently moved to Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital pending postmortem examination, as DCI detectives commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The suspect subsequently went into hiding, prompting DCI Garissa detectives to mount an intelligence-led operation to trace him. After several months of pursuit, the detectives tracked him down to a hideout in Kabete, Nairobi, where he was arrested.
He is expected to be escorted to Garissa to face murder charges as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the decomposed body of a 60-year-old woman who had been missing for about two weeks has been recovered in a rocky area in Kamwangu Sub-Location, Tharaka Nithi County.
The deceased was identified as Serafina Kithetu Simon, a resident of Mara Village.
Police said the body was discovered on Sunday, October 4, 2026, lying between rocky hills in the area.
According to information gathered by investigators, Simon had left her home for an unknown destination about two weeks ago and never returned.
Her disappearance had not been reported at any police station.
The body was recovered and taken to Chuka Level 5 Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death.
