Suspect in murder of university student demanded ransom, family reveals as police raid recover victim’s belongings in his house in Kikuyu


A raid on the house of a suspect in the murder of a university student led to the recovery of belongings of the victim in Kikuyu, Kiambu County.

Jane Atila Quedeya was a student at the University of Nairobi Student- Kikuyu Campus and had been reported missing on October 13, 2025.

Her body was found dumped in Kefri Forest on October 17, 2025, police said.

This prompted a probe that led to the arrest of a key suspect who was his former boyfriend.

A combined team from CRIB Kiambu County headquarters, CRIB DCI Headquarters and team of DCI officers from Kikuyu conducted an Intelligence led operation which eventually led the team into KeFri Forest in Muguga in Kikuyu Sub-County to a crime scene where a decomposed body of the woman.

The team through an interview of prime suspect Nicholas Mutia Mutia opened up and admitted to have lured the victim into the forest after they had an argument with her the previous night before he finally murdered her.

Further to this, the suspect led the officers to the crime scene where the victim was found.

They later recovered from his house and scene a black shoe lace, a pair of rubber shoes, white handkerchief, black and white panty, black and grey back pack with a black hood, yellow manila ripe, an elastic band, pink bedsheet and assorted items belonging to the woman.

The suspect was arrested and arraigned before Kikuyu law courts on October 25, 2025 where 21- days custodial orders were granted. Investigations continue with the miscellaneous application matter set for mention on November 13, 2025.

Jane was a second year University of Nairobi student at Kikuyu campus

On Tuesday, police said, two female victims recorded their statements at the Kikuyu Police Station, saying Mutua abducted them while within KEFRI forest in Kikuyu, Kiambu County. They were allegedly robbed, tortured and sexually abused by the suspect and in some cases beaten and left for the dead.

Police now have their testimonies as part of their evidence against Mutua as they urge more victims with similar encounters to come forward.

Details of a phone call conversation claimed to be between Mutua and Jane’s family has revealed a man who was on a mission.

In the phone call recording, Mutua is heard allegedly demanding money from Jane’s family and threatening them on the night she disappeared.

The family says Mutua demanded for Sh2,500 from them. Jane’s brother managed to send him Sh1,000, and when he didn’t send the extra Sh1,500, Jane was allegedly killed.

Police want to establish what prompted the murder and if the suspect had accomplices in the incident. The suspect has been staying in the Kikuyu area.

Cases of murder have been on the rise amid efforts to address them. Up to eight murder cases are reported daily in Kenya.
