Kenyan comedian Timothy Kimani, popularly known as Njugush ,has turned his matatu business into the centre of attention after treating passengers to free rides during Customer Service Week.
The comedian extended the gesture to passengers using his Super Metro matatu, Toria, as he celebrated the week by giving customers a memorable experience on the Nairobi-Kitengela route.
Njugush shared the moment on social media, where the initiative quickly attracted attention from his followers and Nairobi commuters.
“Customer service week,” Njugush wrote while sharing the moment with his followers.
The gesture comes during Kenya’s 2026 Customer Service Week, which is running from October 5 to 9 under the theme “Extra Mile: Transforming Public Service Through Customer Service Excellence” and the national tagline “Huduma Bora, Taifa Bora.”
Njugush’s unusual way of appreciating customers
Rather than marking Customer Service Week with a conventional message, Njugush brought the celebration directly to Nairobi’s busy public transport scene.
Passengers who encountered him around the matatu were treated to complimentary fares, turning an ordinary commute into an unexpected celebrity encounter.
The move also gave Njugush an opportunity to connect directly with some of the customers who use his investment.
The initiative comes as Toria continues attracting attention because of its distinctive interior and exterior design.
Toria is the second matatu associated with Njugush and his former wife Celestine Ndinda, popularly known as Wakavinye.
The vehicle was named after their younger son and was launched in February 2025. It operates alongside their first matatu, Tugi, on the Nairobi-Kitengela route.
From selling a car to building a matatu business
Njugush’s entry into the matatu industry was initially viewed as an unusual move for a celebrity, but the comedian has steadily expanded the venture.
His first matatu, Tugi, was launched in April 2024. He previously explained that the purchase was partly financed through the sale of his Toyota TX, with additional money added to complete the investment.
The comedian has also spoken about the thinking behind the investment, saying he was interested in turning an asset that would otherwise lose value into a business capable of generating income.
The venture subsequently expanded with Toria, giving the couple two vehicles operating under Super Metro.
Tugi also underwent a major makeover in 2026, receiving customised graphics, enhanced lighting and other features associated with Kenya’s increasingly creative “nganya” culture.
Customer Service Week takes centre stage
Njugush’s gesture comes at a time when several Kenyan institutions and businesses are using Customer Service Week to highlight the importance of treating customers better.
The 2026 national celebrations are focused on improving citizen-centred service delivery and encouraging organisations to go beyond basic service requirements.
KRA has also incorporated commuter outreach into its Customer Service Week activities, while Kenya Railways announced complimentary commuter train tickets as part of its customer appreciation efforts.
Against that backdrop, Njugush’s decision to offer free matatu rides gave the celebrations a distinctly Kenyan twist.
For passengers, it was more than just saving a few shillings.
Some got the rare experience of meeting the comedian behind the investment while travelling in one of his vehicles.
The initiative also highlights how celebrities are increasingly using their businesses and social-media influence to interact directly with their audiences beyond entertainment.
Njugush, who rose to prominence through comedy and later expanded into film, television and business, has previously used his online platforms to share different aspects of his professional and personal life.
His matatu venture has consequently become part of his wider public profile, with Tugi and Toria attracting attention whenever they appear on Nairobi roads.
The latest free-fare gesture therefore combines two things Njugush is known for, connecting with ordinary Kenyans and finding creative ways to turn his business ventures into engaging public moments.
