Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) have thwarted a major drug trafficking operation in Nakuru County, arresting two suspects and recovering cannabis valued at approximately KSh4.62 million.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the operation was launched following intelligence reports that a vehicle suspected of transporting narcotics was travelling along the Eldoret–Nakuru Highway.
“Acting on credible information, detectives established an ambush targeting a motor vehicle believed to be ferrying a large consignment of cannabis,” the DCI said.
Authorities identified the vehicle as registration number KDX 264K and signaled the driver to stop for inspection. However, the driver allegedly ignored the order and sped off, prompting a dramatic chase toward the Subukia area.
“Instead of complying with police instructions, the driver attempted to flee, triggering a high-speed pursuit,” detectives stated.
The pursuit came to an end after officers successfully disabled the vehicle by deflating one of its front tyres, forcing it to stop.
Following the interception, detectives arrested two suspects identified as David Wafula and Loise Akoth.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of seven sacks containing cannabis sativa weighing a total of 154 kilograms.
“Officers recovered seven bulky sacks of cannabis concealed in the vehicle. The narcotics have an estimated street value of KSh4.62 million,” the DCI said.
The suspects were taken into custody and are currently being processed pending their arraignment in court. The seized drugs have been retained as exhibits as investigations continue.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking networks and protecting communities from the harmful effects of narcotics.
“We remain steadfast in our efforts to dismantle drug syndicates and safeguard the public from the dangers associated with narcotics abuse,” the agency stated.
Investigators are now pursuing additional leads to establish whether the suspects were linked to a wider drug trafficking network operating within the region.
