Two-year-old boy drowns while playing near stream in Migori


A two-year-old boy died after drowning in a stream in Suna West Sub-County, Migori County.

The incident occurred on Monday at Gibaria Village as the boy was playing near the Horr stream.

It was then when he slipped and fell into the water.

At the time of the incident, the victim was with his three-year-old elder brother, who ran to seek help from a passer-by, police said

The good Samaritan rushed to the scene and managed to retrieve the child from the stream. However, the boy had already died.

The scene was photographed and documented before the body was moved to Migori County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it will undergo a post-mortem examination.

Police have recorded the incident as a drowning and investigations are ongoing.

Elsewhere, a search operation started after a 19-year-old man was swept away by the waters of River Tana in Garissa County on Monday morning.

The incident occurred in Lagdera Village, Raya Sub-location, Garissa Sub-County.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim, identified as Simon Musyoka, was walking along the banks of River Tana when he was swept away by the fast-flowing waters and drowned.

Efforts by residents and responders to rescue the teenager were unsuccessful.

Police said search and recovery operations are ongoing as teams continue to scour the river in an effort to recover the body.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution around swollen rivers, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall, as investigations into the incident continue.

And police in Tharaka Nithi County have launched investigations after the body of an unidentified man was discovered at Magenka Trading Centre in Chuka South Sub-County early Monday morning.

According to preliminary findings, the deceased is an unidentified African male believed to be about 40 years old. His body was found lying on the ground approximately three metres from a rented house belonging to a 44-year-old woman identified as Elosy Kaware Mutegi.

Police said the deceased had visible head injuries and injuries on both limbs, raising suspicion that he may have been murdered.

Crime scene investigators processed and documented the scene before the body was moved to Chuka Hospital Mortuary, where it will await identification and a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Police have launched investigations to establish the identity of the deceased, the circumstances surrounding his death and to trace those responsible.
