The United States Embassy in Nairobi has announced the appointment of Carla Benini as the new Chargé d’Affaires, making her the top US diplomatic official in Kenya and the lead representative at the largest US embassy in sub-Saharan Africa.
Benini, a seasoned Senior Foreign Service officer, officially assumed her new role on July 21, 2024. She brings a wealth of experience from her diverse diplomatic career spanning multiple continents and key global missions.
Prior to this appointment, Benini served as the Counselor for Public Affairs at the US Embassy in Nairobi, a position she began in 2023.
Her extensive background also includes senior roles in Washington, D.C., notably as Deputy Director for the Office of East African Affairs in the Bureau of African Affairs and as Senior Advisor in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, focusing on global messaging related to China.
Her overseas assignments have included postings in Belgium, Uganda, India, Brazil, and Italy.
This broad exposure has equipped her with strong diplomatic, communications, and public affairs skills.
Before joining the US State Department, Benini worked as a journalist, which further enhances her expertise in media and strategic communications.
Benini holds a degree from Pennsylvania State University and is fluent in French, Portuguese, and Italian, skills that complement her diplomatic work.
She succeeds former US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman, who resigned in November 2023 after a tenure marked by critical US-Kenya collaborations, including emergency response to the 2023 floods and ongoing health initiatives targeting malaria, HIV, and MPOX.
In the interim, Deputy Chief of Mission Marc Dillard served as acting head of mission.
Benini’s appointment signals continuity and strengthened engagement between the United States and Kenya.
As Chargé d’Affaires, she will oversee the Embassy’s diverse programs and partnerships aimed at fostering development, security, and people-to-people ties between the two nations.
The US Embassy and Kenyan stakeholders have warmly welcomed her arrival, expressing confidence in her leadership to deepen the strong bilateral relationship.
