Missing Kakamega man found dead in River Isukhu

A 56-year-old man who had been missing for four days was found dead in River Isukhu, Kakamega County, on Monday.

The deceased, identified as Shem Mukoto, was reported missing on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

According to police, the family received information at about 5:30pm on Monday that a human body had been spotted in River Isukhu.

Officers from Malaika Police Station responded to the scene and, with the assistance of family members and members of the public, retrieved the decomposed body from the river.

Family members positively identified the deceased through the clothes he was wearing.

Preliminary police reports indicate that Mukoto may have drowned while attempting to cross the river, although investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

The scene was processed before the body was moved to Mukumu Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy.

Meanwhile, a 41-year-old man was shot and injured by police officers during an attempt to arrest him over allegations of threatening to kill his 80-year-old father in Nyamache, Kisii County.

The incident occurred on Monday evening in Nyaweni Village, Nyantira Sub-Location, Gionsaria Location.

The officers reportedly knocked on the suspect’s door in the presence of his father, his younger brother.

Police said the suspect emerged from the house armed with a panga and a kitchen knife before allegedly charging towards one of the officers.

It was then that the other fired one round from an AK rifle, striking the man in the lower abdomen.

The bullet reportedly caused an open intestinal perforation.

Hewas initially treated at Nyamache Sub-County Hospital before being referred to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for further treatment. He was reported to be in fair condition.

Police have documented the incident as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
