Geoffrey Mosiria blasts clubs forcing waitresses to dress scantily to attract male clients

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, has continued to draw praise for his ongoing efforts to maintain order, safety and environmental compliance across the city.

Over the years, Mosiria has spearheaded various initiatives aimed at ensuring residents adhere to environmental laws, from shutting down illegal dumpsites to clamping down on noisy nightclubs.

His operations, many of which take place at night, have exposed him and his team to disturbing scenarios that he says undermine women’s dignity.

During some of these inspections, Mosiria revealed that he encountered nightclubs allegedly subjecting their waitresses to indecent dress codes in a bid to attract male clientele.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, November 17, the county official took to social media to call out entertainment joints accused of sexualising their female staff by forcing them to wear raunchy outfits.

He accompanied his statement with a video showing waitresses in extremely revealing attire as they ushered in patrons.

In the footage, the women are seen exposing large portions of their bodies due to the tiny, revealing clothing provided by the establishments.

Mosiria criticised club owners for compelling staff to dress provocatively, reminding them that these women are mothers, sisters, daughters and aunties who deserve respect.

He maintained that businesses do not need to pressure their workers into inappropriate dressing to boost sales.

“To our club owners and managers, I appreciate the fact that you create job opportunities for many young girls and women who work hard to market and grow your establishments. However, I have also observed during our night environmental conservation operations that at times, some are pushed into situations that demand more than what is reasonable, simply to impress clients or meet expectations,” Mosiria wrote.

The county official added that the dignity and safety of workers must be prioritised to create a healthy environment for both staff and customers.

“In today’s digital era, many of these young girls and women engage in online marketing for your establishments, using videos and content that sometimes expose their bodies inappropriately. In some cases, this may be indirectly or even directly encouraged by management to attract big spenders. While this may appear to be a marketing strategy, we must reflect on the long-term impact it has on their dignity and emotional well-being.

We must remember that these young girls and women are someone’s daughter, sister, wife, mother or aunt, and their families would be deeply hurt to see them exposed in ways that compromise their dignity. In future, their children or relatives may come across such content online, leading to unnecessary judgment, criticism or emotional distress,” he said.

“My message is not to condemn anyone, but to remind us that these young girls and women go through a lot just to earn a living. Let us treat them with respect, protect their dignity and create safer working environments that do not expose them to unnecessary pressure. How can we work together to ensure they are supported, safeguarded and not subjected to extreme demands? Your thoughts and ideas are welcome,”he added.

His remarks sparked mixed reactions online.

Many Kenyans supported his sentiments and urged him to take action against clubs imposing such dress codes.

Others, however, criticised him, arguing that he should focus on cleaning Nairobi rather than interfering in business operations.

According to his critics, the waitresses are adults capable of making their own choices, including whether to wear revealing outfits at work.
