Kenya has officially rolled out Lenacapavir, a pioneering long-acting injectable for HIV prevention, in a major milestone aimed at curbing new infections and strengthening the national HIV response.
The launch was presided over by Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale at Riruta Health Centre in Nairobi.
Speaking at the event, CS Adan Duale described the introduction of Lenacapavir as a critical step in prevention efforts, noting that approximately 1.4 million Kenyans are living with HIV, with thousands of new infections reported each year.
He emphasised that expanding access to innovative prevention tools is key to reversing transmission trends and protecting vulnerable populations.
The injectable, which is administered twice a year, has undergone rigorous safety, quality, and effectiveness assessments through both international scientific review and local evaluation by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, with technical support from the Global Fund.
Eligible individuals at selected public health facilities in priority counties will receive the medication free of charge under a structured, phased rollout guided by trained healthcare professionals.
Kenya is among the first countries globally to introduce Lenacapavir for HIV prevention, reflecting international confidence in the country’s health systems and its capacity to responsibly deliver cutting-edge medical innovations.
The launch was attended by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Ouma Oluga; NASCOP CEO Andrew Mulwa; Director of Family Health Issak Bashir; Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi; and representatives from development partners including the Global Fund, UNAIDS, WHO, US Government, and AHF.
CS Duale said the introduction of Lenacapavir marks the first phase of Kenya’s national rollout of long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), reinforcing the country’s commitment to ending the HIV epidemic through innovative, people-centred prevention solutions.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve adherence to HIV prevention, reduce new infections, and strengthen Kenya’s broader efforts to achieve an AIDS-free generation.
