President William Ruto on Friday, November 15, revoked the appointment of Lawrence Thongoro Kuria as Chairperson of the Kenya Hydrologists Registration Board.
The revocation, announced through a notice in the Kenya Gazette, comes just months after Kuria’s appointment in September 2023.
The notice stated that the President, exercising powers granted under Section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, had decided to revoke Kuria’s appointment, although no specific reasons were given for the decision.
Additionally, the President did not indicate whether Kuria would be reassigned to another government role or state agency following the revocation.
Kuria, a well-regarded water engineer, had been appointed to lead the Hydrologists Registration Board, which is responsible for regulating the registration of hydrologists and professionals wishing to practice in the field.
He had been certified as a Qualified Water Resource Professional in 2019 by the Water Services Resources Management Unit, and his role included overseeing the registration and regulation of professionals within the hydrology field.
The Hydrologists Registration Board is a state corporation under the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, established under the Hydrologists Act No. 19 of 2017.
The Board’s mandate includes regulating and overseeing the practice of hydrology in Kenya.
As part of his government reorganization, President Ruto has been making various state appointments, including bringing in members from the opposition.
However, no immediate replacement for Kuria was announced after the revocation of his appointment.
Kuria’s departure from the board marks another significant change in the administration’s ongoing reshuffling of key positions in the public sector.
