26 Illegal firearms surrendered in Turkana as disarmament gains momentum

A total of 26 illegal firearms have been voluntarily surrendered in Turkana County as the ongoing disarmament exercise continues to record significant progress.

The National Police Service (NPS) said the latest recovery was made during an operation in Katilu, where officers oversaw the handover of weapons as part of efforts to curb insecurity in the region.

According to NPS, the firearms surrendered included 21 AK-47 rifles, two M16 rifles, two MK4 firearms, and one G3 rifle.

“The continued peaceful disarmament exercise in Turkana County remains a critical pillar in enhancing security and stability in the region,” the service said in a statement.

Police attributed the success to sustained community engagement and sensitisation campaigns encouraging residents to voluntarily give up illegal weapons.

“This achievement reflects growing community cooperation and the effectiveness of ongoing sensitisation efforts encouraging individuals to relinquish illegal firearms,” the statement added.

Authorities emphasized that the disarmament programme combines enforcement with trust-building initiatives aimed at long-term peace.

“Lasting security is best achieved not only through enforcement, but through trust, cooperation, and shared responsibility,” NPS noted.

The government has intensified similar operations in parts of northern Kenya, where illegal firearms have long contributed to insecurity, cattle rustling, and inter-community conflict.
