Man takes own life at KRA offices in Kisumu after receiving Sh 300 million tax bill


A middle-aged man on Thursday afternoon, October 30, 2025, reportedly took his own life at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices located at Lake Basin Mall in Kisumu after allegedly being issued with a Sh 300 million tax assessment.

According to eyewitnesses, the unidentified man arrived at the mall in a Toyota Land Cruiser V8, parked the vehicle, and handed the keys to a security guard before proceeding into the building.

Moments later, onlookers were shocked to see his body plunge from the second floor of the KRA offices.

The incident was confirmed by KRA through an official statement posted on its social media pages shortly after the tragedy.

“Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) wishes to confirm that an unfortunate incident occurred today, Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the KRA offices at Lake Basin Mall in Kisumu.

A middle-aged man jumped from the second floor of the building, sustained serious injuries, and later succumbed.

KRA deeply regrets this incident and conveys heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities, and investigations are currently underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. KRA is fully cooperating with law enforcement officers to facilitate the ongoing investigations,” the statement read in part.

Sources privy to the matter claimed that the man had earlier been presented with a Sh 300 million tax demand, though the authenticity of the claim could not be independently verified by this publication.

The incident has since triggered an outpouring of shock and grief online, with Kenyans taking to social media to express condolences to the deceased’s family and criticise the country’s tax regime.

Several users accused the tax agency of imposing punitive levies that have allegedly pushed many small business owners and entrepreneurs into financial distress.

Others called on the government to review its tax policies to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Police and KRA officials have since launched investigations into the matter.
