Several supporters allied to the ODM Linda Mwananchi faction were injured on Friday evening after armed goons attacked the movement’s convoy along the Kisii-Keroka Road, disrupting a planned political rally in Keroka.
The convoy, which was travelling from Kisii to Keumbu before proceeding to Keroka, came under attack at Keumbu Market, where a group of youths armed with stones and clubs ambushed the vehicles.
Among those caught up in the violence was United Green Movement Party presidential aspirant David Maraga, whose vehicle was damaged during the incident. Maraga escaped unharmed despite the attack.
Videos circulating online showed the armed youths hurling stones at vehicles in the convoy while others wielded clubs and appeared to target vehicles carrying senior political leaders.
In some of the footage, the attackers are heard warning motorists and supporters against entering the area as the convoy attempted to pass through.
Several vehicles sustained damage during the confrontation, while a number of supporters reportedly suffered injuries.
Some police officers were also seen at the scene in videos shared online, although it remains unclear whether they were unable to intervene in time or why the violence was not immediately contained.
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation, coming amid growing concern over politically related violence and the increasing use of armed gangs to disrupt public gatherings.
Speaking to the media , Kisii Central Sub-County Police Commander Musa Omari confirmed that police had received reports of the attack and had launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the violence in Keumbu.
Leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi faction condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on democratic freedoms, and called for the immediate arrest of those responsible as well as anyone suspected of sponsoring the violence.
The incident is expected to heighten concerns over political intolerance and security ahead of increased political activities across the country.
