Despite police presence providing security, hundreds of Kiambu County business owners are suffering significant losses when unknown persons destroyed their stores and stalls on Sunday night.
Without any previous notice or justification for the demolitions, the traders were stunned to discover their enterprises reduced to rubble the following morning.
A seller said, “I found them demolishing our buildings, and when I asked why, they refused to answer and moved on to the other shops.”
The vendors also claimed that the people in charge of the demolitions had threatened them and stolen their possessions.
Images taken at the scene showed extensive damage that had an impact on a number of establishments, including lodging facilities, mobile money terminals, and apparel retailers.
After touring the site, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi denounced the demolitions.
The governor contacted the Posta director, who denied any involvement, despite rumors that the action might have been approved by the national government.
The public was reassured by Wamatangi that the Posta agency was not involved in the incident.
The governor voiced concern over the county government’s ignorance of the demolitions but pledged assistance to help traders reestablish their companies.
He promised to go into the matter thoroughly, especially those who were acting under police cover.
A similar demonstration at Wangige Market in January 2024 preceded this incident.
