Ugandan football has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of SC Villa captain David Owori, who succumbed to injuries after a brutal attack by suspected thugs near his home in Kampala.
Owori, one of the Uganda Premier League’s most respected defenders and leaders, died on Wednesday, August 5, while receiving treatment at Case Clinic after being assaulted the previous night in the Makindye area.
His death has sparked grief across the country’s sporting fraternity and renewed concerns over rising violent crime in Kampala.
SC Villa confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement, describing the loss as devastating for both the club and Ugandan football.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of our captain, David Owori, who had been receiving treatment following an attack by suspected thugs. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with his family. Rest in peace, Captain,” the club said.
Attacked Near His Home
According to club officials, Owori was ambushed by unknown assailants at around 8 p.m. on Tuesday while returning home in Makindye, Kampala.
Reports indicate the attackers assaulted him before making away with some of his belongings, leaving him critically injured.
Residents and well-wishers rushed the footballer to a nearby medical facility before he was transferred to Case Clinic, where doctors fought to save his life.
Despite their efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries. Police have since launched investigations and a manhunt for those responsible.
A Leader On and Off the Pitch
Owori had established himself as one of SC Villa’s most dependable players during his second spell with the record Ugandan champions.
Primarily a right-back, he was admired for his discipline, consistency and leadership qualities.
He captained the club to the 2023/24 Uganda Premier League title, ending SC Villa’s two-decade wait for a league championship and helping secure the club’s record-extending 17th league crown.
Before joining SC Villa, Owori developed through several youth academies, including Nsambya Young Stars Academy and Wembley Soccer Academy.
He also had playing stints with Vipers SC and enjoyed brief spells abroad before returning to Uganda, where he cemented his place as one of the country’s most experienced defenders.
Football Community Mourns
News of Owori’s death triggered an outpouring of grief from teammates, rival clubs, football administrators and supporters across East Africa.
Many remembered him not only as a gifted footballer but also as a humble leader who inspired younger players both on and off the field.
SC Villa has pledged to stand with Owori’s family during the difficult period and ensure he receives a dignified send-off.
The club also urged law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We call upon the relevant security and law enforcement agencies to urgently pursue, apprehend and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime. This senseless act has robbed the club and the country of a committed captain and promising sportsman, and it must not go unanswered,” the club stated.
Growing Concern Over Violent Crime
Owori’s death has reignited debate over increasing cases of violent attacks in Kampala, particularly in residential neighborhoods.
The tragedy comes only weeks after Ugandan rugby player Sydney Gongodyo also lost his life in a separate violent incident, prompting renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect citizens, including athletes.
As investigations continue, football fans across Uganda and beyond are mourning a player remembered for his courage, professionalism and unwavering commitment to the beautiful game. His untimely death leaves a huge void at SC Villa and in Ugandan football.
