Huruma Residents Count Losses After Sunday Night Fire

Residents of Huruma, Nairobi, are reeling from the aftermath of a fire that broke out on the night of Sunday, August 10, causing significant damage and losses.

The Kenya Red Cross Nairobi Branch confirmed that the fire began around 9 p.m. at Johnsaga, near Jumia Hospital.

Fire engines and emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to the scene and worked alongside local residents to contain the blaze.

“Incident alert at 9 p.m.: A fire incident has been reported at Johnsaga next to Jumia Hospital in Huruma, Nairobi,” the Kenya Red Cross announced on social media. “Response teams are at the scene, working alongside community members to contain the fire.”

Videos circulating online showed large flames engulfing nearby buildings. While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, no casualties had been reported at the time of publication.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have been triggered by the explosion of a gas cylinder.

The incident follows another devastating fire just two months ago in Nairobi’s Kibra estate.

That blaze, which occurred on the night of June 11, destroyed homes and stalls, leaving more than 100 families homeless and many traders counting heavy losses.

Following the Kibra fire, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, who visited the scene with area MP Peter Orero, pledged government support for affected residents.

“Fires in informal settlements have become alarmingly frequent, especially in Nairobi. The government is committed to ending these tragedies to protect lives and property,” Ruku said.

He added, “Early this morning, I visited Mukungu Village in Kibra to support fire victims. The government will provide emergency relief aid to help them rebuild their lives.”

Authorities continue to urge residents in high-risk areas to exercise caution with flammable materials, particularly gas cylinders, to prevent future tragedies.
