LSK demands justice after prominent city lawyer was tortured and brutally murdered

Kenya’s legal fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the gruesome killing of a prominent city lawyer under chilling circumstances that have sparked outrage and renewed concerns about the safety of legal professionals.

The advocate, identified as Tom Ouya Imbukwa, was reportedly attacked, tortured, and ultimately murdered by unknown assailants in what appears to be a targeted and deeply disturbing incident.

His death was confirmed on Wednesday, April 22, by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), sending shockwaves across the country’s justice sector.

A Brutal End in the Line of Duty

Early reports indicate that the lawyer was killed while actively engaged in his professional duties, raising serious questions about whether his work may have exposed him to danger.

According to the LSK, Ouya suffered a violent assault that involved torture before his life was cut short, a detail that has intensified calls for urgent investigations.

In a strongly worded statement, LSK President Charles Kanjama described the killing as both tragic and unacceptable, emphasizing that such acts threaten the very foundation of justice and rule of law in Kenya.

The society expressed deep condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the slain advocate, while urging authorities to act swiftly.

The LSK has now called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to fast-track the probe and bring those responsible to book.

The society also appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that could help unravel the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Legal practitioners across the country have echoed these demands, warning that failure to address such incidents decisively could embolden criminals and put more lawyers at risk.

City lawyer Peter Wanyama is among those who have voiced concern, terming the incident as shocking and calling for immediate accountability.

A Disturbing Pattern

Ouya’s killing adds to a troubling history of violence against legal professionals in Kenya and the wider East African region.

Over the years, several lawyers, particularly those involved in sensitive or high-stakes cases, have faced threats, attacks, and in extreme cases, death.

One of the most notable past incidents was the 2016 killing of human rights lawyer Willie Kimani, who was abducted and murdered alongside his client and driver.

Investigations later revealed they had been tortured before their deaths, highlighting the grave risks faced by advocates pursuing justice in controversial cases.

Such cases have continued to raise alarm among human rights defenders, with regional bodies warning of a growing pattern of targeted violence, abductions, and extrajudicial actions that undermine democratic institutions and public trust.

Fear and Uncertainty in the Legal Fraternity

The latest killing has left many lawyers questioning their safety, especially those handling politically sensitive, criminal, or public interest cases.

For many, the incident is not just a personal tragedy but a stark reminder of the dangers that can accompany the pursuit of justice.

Legal experts argue that when advocates become targets, it sends a chilling message that weakens the justice system and discourages fearless representation.

Calls for Justice Grow Louder

As investigations begin, pressure is mounting on authorities to ensure transparency, accountability, and swift action.

The LSK has insisted that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, both for the sake of the victim’s family and the integrity of Kenya’s legal system.

For now, the country watches closely as detectives piece together the final moments of a man whose life was dedicated to the law, and whose death has once again exposed the fragile line between justice and danger in modern Kenya.
