Mick Fanning began surfing at Brown Bay near Mount Gambier from the age of three. He quickly developed his skill and started attracting attention in competitive surfing. In 1996, he finished in the top three at the Australian National Titles and earned recognition as one of the strongest surfers in Queensland.
His career accelerated in 2001 when he received a wild card entry to the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, one of Australia’s premier surf contests. Most importantly, he went to win the event.
The following year marked another breakthrough. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2002 after victory at the Billabong Pro in Jeffrey’s Bay.
