A family funeral in Guatemala took an unexpected turn after a 15-year-old teenager, whose relatives believed she had died, reportedly regained consciousness inside her coffin, leaving mourners stunned.
The teenager, identified as Yuleidy Ixcotoyac, was at the centre of an emotional scene in the village of El Jocote in Guatemala’s Quiché Department after her mother noticed movement inside the casket during the funeral wake.
According to reports published on October 13, 2026, the incident occurred on Saturday, October 10, after the teenager reportedly collapsed while her father was taking her to a medical centre.
Her sudden recovery transformed what had been a moment of grief into a startling reunion, with relatives and neighbours scrambling to understand what had happened.
How the teenager was presumed dead
Reports indicate that Yuleidy developed severe chest pain before losing consciousness while travelling with her father, Abraham Ixcotoyac.
Her father, who is described in reports as an evangelical pastor, reportedly stopped the vehicle to check on her after she became unresponsive.
He said he could not detect breathing or a pulse and concluded that his daughter had died.
However, the teenager had not been examined by a medical professional, and no formal medical declaration of death had been issued at the time.
Believing that he had lost his daughter, Abraham reportedly obtained a coffin and returned home, where preparations for the wake began.
Relatives, neighbours and other mourners subsequently gathered at the family home to pay their last respects to the teenager.
The situation would soon take a dramatic turn that nobody at the gathering had anticipated.
Mother notices movement inside the coffin
As the family mourned, Yuleidy’s mother, Lesvia Ríos, was reportedly beside the coffin when she noticed signs of movement.
According to accounts shared by international media, she realised that something was happening inside the casket and alerted those around her.
Mourners moved closer as the coffin was opened, only to discover that the teenager was alive.
The teenager reportedly opened her eyes and sat upright, prompting those present to help her out of the coffin and offer her water.
The discovery brought an extraordinary change to the atmosphere at the family home, where people had gathered expecting to say goodbye to a loved one.
Footage of the incident circulated online, drawing widespread attention and prompting discussions about how the teenager had been presumed dead in the first place.
