Shock and grief have engulfed Harambee Khalsa Comprehensive School in Nakuru after the body of a school watchman was discovered dumped inside a classroom following a suspected robbery.
The grim discovery was made on the morning of Thursday, January 8, forcing the suspension of learning activities at the institution.
Images circulating in the media showed bloodstains on the classroom floor where the watchman’s body was found.
Residents of Nakuru, accompanied by the deceased’s family members, gathered at the school as they mourned the tragic loss.
Speaking to journalists, the watchman’s son described the death as a devastating blow to the family, noting that his father was their sole breadwinner.
“He paid my school fees using the salary he earned from this school until I completed my studies. He would even take loans from the school to support us,” the son said.
He added that the deceased was also responsible for paying the school fees of his younger brother, who is currently in Form Four.
The chairperson of the school board called for swift investigations, stating that the school had little of value to attract such a violent attack.
“This is a big shock to the school because there was nothing to steal here. The police should act quickly to apprehend those responsible,” the chairperson said.
Staff at the school reported that several classroom windows and offices had been broken into, suggesting a possible robbery attempt.
Nakuru East Police Commander Samson Andaje, however, ruled out the possibility of the killing being a targeted attack. He noted that the office break-ins indicate a broader criminal act.
“This was not a targeted incident. An office was broken into, and the scene is currently being analysed to establish what, if anything, was stolen,” Andaje said.
Police have launched investigations into the incident as they work to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
