Mombasa man sentenced to life for defiling minors and distributing pornography

Mombasa Man Sentenced to Life for Defiling Minors and Distributing Pornography The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has achieved a landmark conviction in Mombasa, securing three life sentences for a 72-year-old man, Kazungu Kalume Begande, who was found guilty of multiple counts of defilement and child pornography.

The sentencing took place at the Mombasa Law Courts under Senior Resident Magistrate Hon. David Odhiambo, who determined that Begande was responsible for the heinous abuse of four minors aged 6, 9, 12, and another 13-year-old.

Begande faced five counts of defilement alongside one count of sharing pornographic materials.

For each of the three defilement charges involving the youngest victims, he received a life sentence.

Additionally, he was sentenced to 30 years for defiling the 13-year-old, highlighting the severity of his offenses.

The court heard harrowing testimonies from a total of ten witnesses, including the minors, their parents, medical professionals, and law enforcement officers.

These testimonies helped establish a clear narrative of Begande’s predatory behavior over a span of more than a year, during which he exposed the children to pornographic material and orchestrated sexual assaults.

In a particularly chilling account, the court learned that Begande, who lived in proximity to the victims, lured them to his home with the promise of watching television.

Once there, he would show them pornographic videos before engaging in sexual acts, often coercing them with small monetary gifts and warnings to keep silent about the incidents.

Medical examinations presented by a clinical officer revealed severe physical evidence of defilement, including broken hymens and vaginal injuries, corroborating the victims’ accounts.

Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, including a confession made to police at the time of his arrest, Begande denied the charges.

He claimed his accusations were fabricated due to a prior disagreement concerning a debt with the mother of one of the minors.

The prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to this significant ruling aimed at safeguarding children from sexual exploitation.

The court’s decision serves both as a severe punishment for the perpetrator and a strong warning against child abuse in the community.
