Man dies after assault over stolen rabbits in Meru


Police in Meru County have arrested four people following the death of a 30-year-old man who was allegedly assaulted over claims that he had stolen rabbits.

The victim, identified as Eric Kiogora, was reportedly taken from his home on Sunday afternoon by a group of individuals who accused him of stealing rabbits belonging to a local resident.

According to police, the suspects allegedly subjected Kiogora to a severe beating before family members and other residents intervened and rescued him while he was in critical condition.

The family reported the matter at Meru Police Station and rushed him to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following the death report, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Imenti North launched investigations and documented the body at the hospital mortuary.

Police said the deceased had multiple visible injuries on the face, hands, shoulders and back. Investigators also noted bleeding from the mouth and left ear.

Detectives later arrested two murder suspects who are being processed for the offence of murder.

In a related development, two women were arrested for allegedly obstructing police officers in the execution of their duties during the operation.

Police said efforts are ongoing to trace additional suspects believed to have participated in the assault.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
