Tanzania’s Vice President Philip Mpango Announces Retirement To Honour Family Legacy

Tanzania’s Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango has officially announced his retirement from public service, bringing an end to a distinguished career spanning over four decades in government, academia, and economic policy.

Dr. Mpango made the surprise announcement on Wednesday during the 20th anniversary celebration of Ruaha Catholic University (RUCU) in Iringa, revealing that he plans to return to farming his late father’s lifelong profession as a way of honouring his family’s legacy.

“I have decided to retire from public service and go back to farming, which was my father’s lifelong occupation,” he said.

“I have served my country with commitment and integrity. Now it’s time to return home and take up the hoe.”

Dr. Mpango, who has served as Vice President since March 30, 2021, said the decision marks a full-circle moment in his life and career.

He emphasized the importance of youth empowerment, noting that over 75 percent of Tanzania’s population is made up of young people.

“We have been nurtured, and we have served; now it is the turn of the youth. It is time for them to make their mark,” he said, encouraging the next generation to take up leadership and national service.

The announcement comes at a politically significant time for Tanzania, with the country preparing for its General Elections in October 2025.

Dr. Mpango used the occasion to call for peace and active civic engagement, particularly from young voters.

“Let us vote for visionary and capable leaders who will manage our resources wisely for the benefit of future generations.

I urge all citizens to safeguard the peace of our motherland during this election season,” he said.

His statement drew applause from students, faculty, clergy, and guests attending the event, many of whom commended his statesmanship and integrity over the years.

Before his appointment as Vice President by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in 2021, he served as Minister of Finance and Planning from 2015 to 2021 under the late President John Magufuli.

He also previously held roles as Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and worked with international institutions such as the World Bank, contributing to Tanzania’s financial and economic reforms.

Dr. Mpango holds a PhD in Economics and is recognized for his deep expertise in fiscal policy, economic planning, and public financial management.

As Tanzania prepares for a new chapter in its leadership, Dr. Mpango’s retirement signals both an end and a beginning one that returns him to his roots while paving the way for a new generation of leaders.
