President Ruto leads nation in celebrating Raila Odinga’s 81st birthday

President William Samoei Ruto on Tuesday led Kenyans in marking the 81st birthday of veteran opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga, hailing him as a patriot whose life has been defined by courage, sacrifice, and an enduring commitment to the nation.

In a message issued on January 7, President Ruto praised Odinga for consistently placing the interests of the country above personal ambition, noting that his long political journey has been guided by the principles of unity, peace, and national stability.

Baba taught us, time and again, that the country must always come before self, that no ambition is greater than our unity, and no victory more important than our peace,” the President said, using Odinga’s popular nickname.

Ruto acknowledged Odinga’s role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape over several decades, both as a reformist who endured detention and political persecution, and as a statesman who at critical moments chose reconciliation over conflict.

He cited Odinga’s involvement in national unity efforts, including past bipartisan engagements aimed at safeguarding peace and cohesion.

The President said Odinga has remained steadfast in his belief in Kenya’s future, maintaining hope even during periods of political struggle and division.

“Whether in struggle or reconciliation, he chose stability over chaos, unity over division, and hope over despair,” Ruto noted.

As Kenyans celebrated Odinga’s birthday, the Head of State urged leaders and citizens alike to reflect on the lessons drawn from his life, including the need to rise above partisanship, close ranks for the common good, and remain committed to the Kenyan dream.

Raila Odinga, born on January 7, 1945, is a former Prime Minister and longtime opposition leader who has contested the presidency several times and remains one of the most influential figures in Kenya’s political history.
