The Commission for University Education (CUE) has issued a stern warning to unaccredited institutions, emphasizing that issuing academic certificates without proper accreditation is illegal.
In a press release on Tuesday, December 24, the CUE reiterated that the Universities Act prohibits the provision of university education without the necessary government approval.
The commission stressed that it would pursue legal action against any individuals or organizations involved in operating unaccredited higher learning institutions.
In the statement, the CUE encouraged the public to visit its official website at https://cue.or.ke/index.php/status-of-universities to verify the list of accredited universities and the programs they offer.
“It is important for the public to know that awarding degrees or academic qualifications by unaccredited institutions violates the Universities Act, which prohibits the provision of university education without government recognition,” the CUE said.
Additionally, the commission announced that it had launched an investigation into the unauthorized issuance of degrees by Northwestern Christian University.
CUE clarified that the university had its operating license revoked in 2023, yet it continued to offer academic programs and issue degrees without accreditation.
“The university was clearly informed through public notice that it was not authorized to offer university education in Kenya, and any qualifications it awarded would not be recognized,” the commission stated.
The warning comes just hours after the Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK) ordered Northwestern Christian University to rescind the honorary doctorate degree it awarded to Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi.
The degree, which included the title of ‘Engineer,’ was issued during the university’s 17th graduation ceremony on December 21.
The EBK’s directive followed public concerns over the improper use of the professional title “Engineer” on the honorary certificate.
