Police in Kisumu County launched investigations following the killing of a night guard during an attempted robbery at a restaurant in the Alang’o area of Kisumu East Sub-County.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday at Sakina Gardens Restaurant, where a gang of about 10 men armed with crude weapons reportedly stormed the premises.
According to police and the restaurant management, the attackers first confronted the night guard, Stephen Juma, 40, and inflicted severe injuries on him before proceeding to the main office.
The gang allegedly forced open the office door in an apparent attempt to steal valuables but failed to make away with any property.
The restaurant’s director, who is a licensed firearm holder, reportedly heard the commotion and responded by firing several warning shots into the air.
The gunfire caused the suspects to flee the scene before they could complete the robbery.
The injured guard was rushed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police officers responded to the incident, visited the scene and carried out forensic documentation as investigations commenced.
Detectives are pursuing leads to identify and arrest the attackers.
The body of the deceased was moved to the hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
Meanwhile, police in Migori County arrested a murder suspect who had been on the run for several months following an operation that ended with an accidental police shooting that injured both the suspect and an officer.
The suspect was being sought in connection with the murder of Nyakorema Maroa Wankanda, which occurred in Masaba Town on January 10, 2026.
According to police, detectives received intelligence on the suspect’s whereabouts and, together with officers from Kehancha Police Station, mounted an operation in Masaba Town on Monday shortly after midnight.
The suspect was reportedly found inside a local club. As officers attempted to arrest him, he allegedly tried to flee but was intercepted by a police officer.
Police said the officer and the suspect fell onto a table during the struggle, causing the officer’s firearm to accidentally discharge.
As a result, the corporal sustained gunshot wounds to his left lower leg, while the suspect suffered an injury to his right upper limb.
Both men were rushed to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital, where they received treatment and were later discharged.
Authorities said no other injuries were reported during the incident.
Following treatment, the suspect was placed in lawful police custody and is expected to face charges related to the January murder case.
Investigators are expected to revisit the scene as part of ongoing inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge and to establish whether there was any additional damage or injuries.
Police said investigations into both the murder case and the shooting incident are continuing.
